Glossary F

Fan-trained

Where a plant is trained, usually against a wall, with the help of wires, to create a fan shape. Used to maximise space, sunlight and airflow, it is also done for aesthetics. The training of peach and apricot trees in this way allows them to benefit from the warmth and protection offered by a wall.

Flower

The reproductive structure that occurs on flowering plants to allow sexual reproduction with the formation of seeds after pollination. Flowers usually consist of petals, pistils (female part) and stamen (male part), and occur in a wide variety of different forms and structures. Many flowers have evolved to attract insects and animals to assist in pollination.

Fruit

A fruit is the ripened ovary or ovaries of a seed bearing plant. These fruits may take one of a number of different forms, eg, follicle, achene, capsule, nut, pome, berry, drupe or syncarp. Fruits are the plants way of distributing seeds.

Fungicide

A chemical, usually a liquid spray, used to control or destroy fungus. These chemical preparations can be brought from garden centres but must be used in accordance with the instructions for personal and environmental safety.
