Variegated

Where the foliage of a plant differs in colour over the leaf surface, as a result of differing levels of chlorophyll. Common combinations are green with cream, white or silver, although some plants produce foliage that mix green with reds and yellows.

Variety

A group of plants sharing distinctive features within a species, but not sufficiently distinct to be classed as a separate species, for example Acer palmatum var. dissectum, are separated as having leaves with deeply incised lobes.

Vegetative Propagation

Asexual reproduction, where the new plant is genetically identical to the parent plant. Examples incluse cuttings, offsets and layering.

Ventilation

The circulation of fresh air in an enclosed environment. For example the airing of a greenhouse by opening the door, vents and louvers. This helps maintain a desirable temperature, refresh stagnant air and reduce the spread of fungal diseases.

Vermiculite

A natural, sterile, soft mica mineral (hydrous phyllosilicate) with great water holding and insulation properties. Used in horticulture for seed germination, storage of bulbs and root crops and as a soil conditioner.

Virus

A type of microscopic organism, which reproduces inside plant cells, causing them to die. This detrimental health of the plant and is classed as a disease. Viruses that attack plants are often transmitted by sap-sucking insects such as aphids.
