John’s Garden
‘John’s Garden’ at Ashwood Nurseries is a wonderful eight acre private garden created by nursery owner and Chelsea Gold medallist John Massey VMH. Informal borders, island beds, woodland dells and a wildlife garden are set against the beautiful backdrop of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal.
Regarded as one of the finest private gardens in the UK, there are magnificent collections of trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials, conifers and bulbs adding to the interest all year round, with an abundance of rare plants as well as familiar favourites.
Essential Information
John’s Garden is open to the public on Saturdays throughout the year, with the exception of January. We also welcome visitors on Easter Sunday and other selected dates. Please see below for full details of these, along with all other upcoming events in John’s Garden.
Garden admission is £8.00 per person (children under 12 enter free), with proceeds supporting our Charity of the Year 2026 and the Adam Greathead Award unless otherwise stated. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance on the day of your visit; pre-booking is not necessary.
Group visits to John’s Garden can also be arranged and John welcomes groups and organisations with a keen interest in gardening.
Please note that the wildlife garden is accessible depending on weather and ground conditions.
We are sorry but dogs are not allowed in the garden, nor do we allow picnics in the garden.

During Spring
The garden is a delight in spring, with anemones, primroses, hepaticas, trilliums, erythroniums, narcissi, tulips and a host of other bulbs.

Autumn brings superb colour with carpets of cyclamen and colchicums, malus trees laden with crab apples and the fiery hues of liquidambar, euonymus and acers.
