Ashwood Nurseries is traditional working plant nursery and garden centre situated in a rural location, where many of the plants on offer are grown on the premises. Admission to the centre and car parking are free.We are open throughout the year with ample parking on site and easy access to facilities for the disabled. Several manual wheelchairs are available in the Garden Shop and the Gift Shop to use free of charge, but be aware of some gentle slopes on site when using these. All automatic and manual doors are wide enough to allow wheelchair access and there are no steps. Seats are available around the site which includes the following:
Our friendly staff have a wealth of experience, and are able to offer free advice on all horticultural topics.
John’s Garden: The nursery owner opens his adjacent private garden to the public on specific Open Days with all proceeds being donated to charity. Most parts of the garden are suitable for wheelchair access in dry weather, but some difficulty may be encountered in very wet or frosty conditions on the extensive lawned area. A canal borders the garden and there is a deep pond so children must be supervised at all times. Well-behaved dogs on a lead are allowed in the garden.
The Wildlife Meadow: This is situated adjacent to John’s Garden and is open to the public on John’s Garden Open Days, but only when the weather and ground conditions permit. Access is from the garden and via a steep incline: sturdy shoes are essential. Children must be supervised at all times and there is currently no disabled access to the meadow.
Our website (www.ashwoodnurseries.com) has detailed directions, contact numbers and clear descriptions of facilities on site, and these can also be obtained in paper form on application, together with full colour leaflets and brochures. These are widely distributed through other tourist venues and through lectures and promotions.

John’s Garden is private and opens to the public on specific days, when an entrance charge is made in aid of charity. Signs on the car parks and entrances clearly indicate when the garden is open and dates are published annually on the website, and in promotional literature.
Car Parks: There are two tarmac car parks, one on either side of Ashwood Lower Lane.
For the Garden Shop and Nursery, the small car park is situated across the road, but care is needed here when crossing the lane.
For the Tea Room, Gift Shop, main toilet block and also the Nursery the main car park is adjacent with an over flow car park on grass. This car park has designated disabled parking. There is parking for around 340 cars in total, ten designated disabled spaces in the Gift Shop/Tea Room main car park and one designated coach parking space adjacent to the Gift Shop. The Gift Shop car park is lit at night.
Hard Surfaces: All pathways are of tarmac, brick paving or slabs, and there are some gentle slopes but no steps. All public buildings are well lit, mostly with fluorescent lights and all have easy access.
Dogs are welcome if kept on a lead and there is a water bowl available outside the Gift Shop.
Opening times are displayed at the entrances to the Garden Shop/Nursery and the Gift Shop/Tea Room.
Opening times vary with the season and are clearly displayed but always between 9am and 5pm. The Tea Room is open at 9.45am until 4.45pm all year. We open every day except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
The main toilet block is situated on the outside the Gift Shop building, just a few metres from the Tea Room. There is a separate unisex disabled toilet with an outward facing door together with baby changing facilities and an emergency alarm cord. There are also Ladies’ and Men’s toilets at the rear of the Garden Shop, approached through the pot and compost sales area.
All have hand washing facilities.
The Tea Room is located close to a car park, access on level ground being through automatic doors from the car park and also from a hinged door from the Show Garden. Visitors who have difficulty walking can be dropped off close to the entrance. There are no steps to negotiate and there is both indoor and outdoor seating.
Staff will assist disabled visitors to be seated at a table on request. Tables are moveable allowing easier wheelchair access indoors where necessary and there are picnic style benches outdoors.
Refreshments are ordered and paid for at the servery, and freshly prepared dishes are brought to the table by staff. Menu boards are located in the foyer at the entrance to the Tea Room servery. Food is freshly prepared and some special dietary requirements are catered for on request. (Tea Room direct line – 01384 275956)
High chairs for children are available. Only assistance dogs are allowed in the Tea Room.
All items are individually priced, although more expensive items are displayed in locked and alarmed cabinets. Our staff are always available to assist and offer advice on purchases.
All items are individually priced and baskets and trolleys are available for customer use. Staff will assist customers with any heavy items, and take them to their cars/coach on request.
The Nursery Show Garden has some uneven paths that may be difficult to negotiate for disabled visitors or those with walking difficulties, but some parts are more easily accessed. There are two deep ponds so children should be supervised at all times.
The play equipment is inspected annually for safety, and is surrounded with safety surfacing. It is suitable for children over three years of age, but they should be supervised by an adult at all times.
There is seating for adults in the play area.
Smoking is not allowed within any building on site. We have a total of seven trained first-aiders, and any staff member will locate one of these, should the need arise. Manually operated fire alarm systems are installed in the Garden Shop, Gift Shop and Tea Room together with emergency lighting.
