A love letter to a single genus, My World of Hepaticas comprehensively documents a lifetime’s work studying, breeding and growing these fascinatingly irresistible plants. For anyone who has a passion for hepaticas or who would like to become more familiar with this enchanting genus, this book is essential reading.

Beautifully illustrated and rich with exquisite photographs, it is written by John Massey, owner of Ashwood Nurseries. His in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience of the subject comes to the fore, the book outlining the best cultural methods for each species in order to achieve the perfection which every serious grower should aim for. In addition to the description of each species, there are detailed descriptions of many cultivars, both old and new, information about their origins as well as detailed botanical descriptions and scientific studies by Tomoo Mabuchi.

It is also John’s personal travelogue which visits little known locations and introduces many enthusiasts from around the world who share a common interest in hepaticas. There are chapters on exhibiting at shows including the world famous Chelsea Flower Show in London. Above all else, it is an engaging, personal journey with many diversions along the way, making it an easy read whilst at the same time instilling a wealth of practical knowledge.

What our customers say

  • Nigel H Verified Buyer
I have always found Ashwood’s service to be excellent and reliable over the years I have bought plants from them. Due to one of my heathers dying from a lack of water this summer thanks to an unnoticed blocked irrigation line, I needed a large replacement to fill the gap. These were currently out of stock so I asked to be notified when back in and on receiving this, ordered two plants which were delivered the following week. They were well packed, arrived in excellent condition with plenty of flower buds and one is fitting in nicely with the original plants. Highly recommended nursery.

Bought a Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Fernspray Gold'. Excellent plant. Well packaged and delivered. No issues. So pleased I bought a second one.
  • Alan R Verified Buyer
I ordered 2 climbers and shrub mail order. They came with a week and I was kept infomed by email. The care in packaging was outstanding in stiff cardboard box with a firm carboard tray and well wrapped and supported plants. All plants were in good condition (especially considering the drought) - the only damage was done by me in unravelling the stems of one of the climbers. Fully recommend and will do again.

Three plants arrived swiftly and in very good health - two escallonias and a ceratostigma. A very good size too, clearly well looked after. Great selection of plants elsewhere in the online catalogue too
