Prefers a sunny position in full sun in a slightly acidic well drained soil. Gardens do not have to depend on flowering plants for year-round interest; conifers can deliver any sized garden with structure, shape and colour to create all year-round interest. The plants in this group are long lived and available in many shapes, colours and forms and are easy to maintain. Dwarf conifers live happily with other plants in containers; try them with winter bedding and early spring bulbs and flowers, which can then be swapped for summer bedding. Heathers and hardy cyclamen also make a great combination. Plant them in a rockery to create shape and structure amongst dwarf shrubs, alpines and heathers.
Planting: Prefer an open, sunny spot and a moist but well-drained soil. Add any humus material such as garden compost or spent compost. Watering after planting is essential, especially in spring and summer, and regularly thereafter if dry weather persists. Inadequate watering is the main cause of failure when establishing conifers.
Aftercare: One or two feeds with a slow release fertiliser each year such as bonemeal will be maintain growth.
