Overview
A thornless raspberry/blackberry hybrid. Very high yields of enormous, long, cone-shaped berries ripening from mid July. Loganberries have an excellent aromatic flavour, they are juicier but sharper than raspberries. The fruit is ideal for all purposes and is best cropped when they turn deep red in colour. Bushy vigorous growth and the branches need permanent support so is ideal for training against a wall or fence. Cropping season: mid July/August. Self fertile.
Plant in an open sunny or lightly shaded spot, 1.5m (5ft) apart in rows 1.5m (5ft) apart. Prefers a moist but well drained fertile soil. Soak the root-ball before planting. Plant in a hole twice the diameter of the root-ball or pot. Mix an organic soil improver and general fertiliser with the infill soil. Water regularly until established.
Fruit is produced on the previous year’s shoots. Tie in new shoots – these will flower and fruit in the second year. Cut away all fruiting canes after harvest and replace them with new vigorous shoots and the most vigorous of the older ones. Cut back weak and damaged shoots in Autumn. In Spring apply a general fertiliser.
