Overview

A particularly attractive variety, with large lacy, pale green fronds, the shuttlecock fern adds great beauty to the garden especially in Spring when its tall soft green fronds, backlit by sunshine, start to unfurl. it’s a decduous fern for dappled shade, amongst deciduous trees and shrubs, or planted in drifts next to water. It will colonise the ground wherever it is planted but can be easily controlled.

Ferns are amazingly tolerant but are generally happiest in partial or dappled shade on any cool, leafy, free-draining soil.

They will add colour, form and texture as well as movement in the garden and are ideal subjects for planting under deciduous trees and shrubs.

Ferns also associate well with herbaceous perennials in the mixed border and add bold foliage interest to a poolside setting.

Or why not try them in pots in shady areas of the garden, under-planted with miniature spring bulbs?
