Overview

This is a superb form, found at a site on the banks of the river Tay in Scotland. The leaves are greyish-green, almost lead-like in colour with deep purple-red stems and leaf stalks. Our native ‘stinking hellebore’ is so named as the foliage gives off an odour, but only when crushed!

Position: Prefers a well-drained fertile soil in partial shade, sheltered from cold winds.

Cultural advice: Remove old faded flower stems after flowering, unless you require the seed, to encourage next year’s new growth.
