Overview

A handsome fern which forms a stately semi-evergreen habit of arching fronds. The fronds emerge in a shuttlecock-like habit and are a warm butter yellow when they unfurl in spring, which contrasts well with the blackish-brown scales on the stalks and midrib. The fronds mature to a rich green as the season progresses and often stay green through the winter in frost free areas.

Ferns are amazingly tolerant but are generally happiest in partial or dappled shade on any cool, leafy, free-draining soil.

They will add colour, form and texture as well as movement in the garden and are ideal subjects for planting under deciduous trees and shrubs.

Ferns also associate well with herbaceous perennials in the mixed border and add bold foliage interest to a poolside setting.

Or why not try them in pots in shady areas of the garden, under-planted with miniature spring bulbs?
