Overview

An evergreen tree fern which can be deciduous in colder areas. It is slow growing, eventually forming a stout reddish-brown trunk with a rosette of arching, deeply divided glossy deep green fronds, extending up to 3m in length when mature.

As it is tender, in colder areas it is advisable to either move it inside to a frost free greenhouse or conservatory to protect it during the winter. Alternatively, if it is too large and established to move undercover, protect the trunk and crown in late autumn.

Ferns are amazingly tolerant but are generally happiest in partial or dappled shade on any cool, leafy, free-draining soil.

They will add colour, form and texture as well as movement in the garden and are ideal subjects for planting under deciduous trees and shrubs.

Ferns also associate well with herbaceous perennials in the mixed border and add bold foliage interest to a poolside setting.

Or why not try them in pots in shady areas of the garden, under-planted with miniature spring bulbs?
