A new introduction from Raymond Evison, ‘Baroness Fookes’ features purple/blue flowers with striking purple bars, red anthers and ruffled edges. Flowering from May well into July, this is an extremely free-flowering variety with successional buds, producing a long lasting display of colour. An ideal variety for patios, containers and front of boarders.
This is a Raymond Evison Clematis and part of the Compact Patio range. These varieties are compact with a bushy habit, easy to care for and prune, and produce vigorous regrowth in the spring. They are ideal for growing in containers, patios or small spaces. This plant is protected by plant breeders’ rights.

Clematis Baroness Fookes
- Planting: Clematis prefer deep, rich soil that remains moist but well-drained. They require a sunny position, with their roots in the shade of other plants. Keep it well watered during its first Spring and Summer.
- Pruning Group 2: Cut back to the framework of old wood in February, leaving shoots with healthy buds. Prune again after the first flush of flowers to encourage a second flush. Cut back to large buds or strong side shoots.
- Care: Rootgrow (beneficial mycorrhizal beneficial fungi) sprinkled on the roots prior to planting will aid root development. Clematis are hungry plants and benefit from regular feeding with Vitax Clematis Feed.
- Support: Requires a framework to grow on such as a trellis, obelisk or a pergola. Tie in young shoots using a soft tie such as Flexi-tie.
This variety is named in honour of Janet Evelyn Fookes, Baroness Fookes DBE DL, who in 2023 was one of the first people to be awarded the new Royal Horticultural Society award, the Elizabeth Medal of Honour, presented by His Majesty King Charles, for all the exceptional work she has done towards supporting British Ornamental Horticulture and Landscaping and assisting with parliamentary debates in the House of Lords.
