Overview

A small, upright conifer with spire like shoots, tufted with congested foliage. Slow growing but forms a very architectural outline after a few years. Prefers a sheltered site, open to the rain but with a free draining soil. Ideal in an alpine trough or rock garden.

Height 60-90cm x Spread 60cm (2-3ft x 2ft) in 10 years.

Chamaecyparis obtusa Chirimen

Dwarf conifers provide structure, shape and colour to create all year-round interest. They are long lived and available in many shapes, colours and forms and are easy to maintain. Pair with alpines, heathers and hardy cyclamen.

  • Planting: Avoid waterlogged ground. For container planting, most conifers prefer an ericaceous compost. Avoid overpotting small plants as they will sit too wet in the pot. Most conifers like an open, sunny spot. They will tolerate some shade but grow better in full sun.
  • Fertiliser: Bonemeal can be added into the growing medium to aid root development. A slow-release fertiliser can be used in spring, such as Miracle-Gro.
  • Watering: Conifers are susceptible to being overwatered, especially when grown in containers. Watering after planting is essential, especially in spring and summer whist the plant is settling in. Once the conifer is well established you only need to water during long, dry periods.
