Overview

Berberidopsis coronilla is a woody climber with glossy green, serrated foliage. In the summer it produces clusters of deep red flowers, forming a group of pendant blossoms. The flowers are small semi-doubles, occasionally producing dark purple berries after flowering. Needs some protection from dry winds and strong sunlight, so is ideal for a shaded position or a north-facing wall.

  • Planting: Prefers sandier soil, but will tolerate some other soil types. Plant in a north facing boarder, or somewhere relatively shaded. Add Rootgrow to help the plant establish.
  • Care: No regular pruning required. If the plant needs tidying do this in spring once the threat of frosts have passed. Remove any weak or dead stems using sharp secateurs but do not prune hard.

Although hardy, Berberidopsis coronilla does not tolerate cold winter winds and frosts. It is not covered in our hardy plant guarantee.
