The Fruit Garden
Continue a full preventative spray programme for top fruit at post blossom and fruitlet stages against pests, NEVER spraying when fruit trees are in flower as this will kill beneficial insects such as bees and ALWAYS check the instructions and restrictions. Soft fruit also benefits from a regular preventative spraying regime, using a proprietary insecticide suitable for for most insect pests on fruit.
There is now no chemical control for fungal diseases on fruit. Any canker, mildew or blossom wilt infected flower trusses are best cut out and burned. It is advisable to remove all vegetation around the base of all fruit trees: spot treat any weeds such as docks and thistles etc. with Roundup Gel rather than disturbing the roots of established fruit.
Hang pheromone traps in apple trees to check for Codling Moth. Cover strawberry plants with netting to prevent bird damage and protect the fruit by placing straw or black polythene etc. underneath. Shade and ventilate covered strawberries.
