Cercidiphyllum japonicum is fast growing and spreading in habit.  At its happiest in lime free soils, the Katsura tree produces small, heart-shaped leaves which in autumn turn smokey shades of pink and yellow, producing an aroma of burnt sugar upon falling.  A moist fertile soil in dappled shade are ideal conditions for this tree.

Position: Prefer a good fertile soil in dappled shade, making it an ideal choice for woodland gardens. Avoid limy soil conditions.

Pruning: Thin some of the branches to encourage new growth up to a quarter of the branches can removed each year. It is advisable to carry this out during the summer as it will cut down on any risk of disease entering the pruning cuts.
