Strawberries are incredibly easy to grow and their fruits are incredibly popular.

You can grow strawberry plants almost anywhere – in borders, containers or hanging baskets. Nothing tastes quite the same as home-grown strawberries! Traditionally strawberries were grown in rows directly into garden soil. In poor soils grow in raised beds with enriched soil alternatively, try growing in containers or grobags. Choose a sunny, sheltered position.

Water throroughly before planting. Prepare the planting area by digging a hole twice the size of the pot and adding organic soil improver or a good quality compost to enrich the soil. Remove the pot and plant in the prepared hole. Water well and water regularly until established. Feed with a high potash fertiliser such as tomato food or chempak no 4 during the growing season to encourage flowers.

In May, protect your strawberry plants with fleece if overnight frost threatens developing fruits. You may also need to protect your plants from birds and slugs as fruits develop and ripen.
