Magenta and cerise-pink sweet peas create an opulent commingle of colour with picotee blooms of eye-catching canary-yellow, and their upper petals gently tinged with terracotta red. Held among a scramble of narrow leaves and closed buds, Eckford Darlings holds an under-glaze fusion not usually associated with the traditional maroon and purple original colours of the sweet pea. Named after nurseryman, Henry Eckford (1823-1905), who cross-bred and developed the sweet pea, turning it from a rather insignificant, if sweetly scented flower, into the floral sensation of the 19th century, and receiving the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour for creating nearly 200 sweet pea varieties.
