Nicola Slaney first sets out to tempt you and then to draw you into her net of colour. This is no easy task, but it is made slightly easier with the use of a plaque, now one of the most subtle ways of attracting the viewer into the finer reaches of ceramic art. For The Ashwood Collection, Nicola has used large broad floral anemones, found growing wild in abundance in the Mediterranean, ranging from white to dark pink whilst dark, greyish green leaves stay shyly hidden near the base. This springtime flower likes nothing better than being shaded beneath the olive trees that grow on the mountainsides, but is equally at home in the cooler climate of the British Isles.
