Overview
‘The Generous Gardener’ is a rose of delicate charm with beautifully formed flowers, which nod gracefully on the stem. When the petals open they expose numerous stamens, providing an almost water lily-like effect. The flowers are a pale glowing pink, shading to palest pink on the outer petals. There is a strong and delicious fragrance with aspects of Old Rose, musk and myrrh. The leaves are a pale greyish green and they stay on until late into the winter. (DavidﾠAustin, 2002. Ausdrawn)
English climbing roses are perfect for softening structures or creating height in your garden. Unlike many climbing roses, they repeat flower with exceptional continuity and are clothed in blooms from the ground upwards. As a group, they don’t grow too tall, making them easy to manage and the perfect height for appreciating the beauty and fragrance of their blooms.
Position: Give them an open sunny position and any deep well-drained soil including clay.
Cultivation: They need plenty of nutrients so add Bonemeal and garden compost or well-rotted manure when planting. Rootgrow (mycorrhizal beneficial fungi) sprinkled on the roots will aid root development. Use a rose fertiliser such as Toprose during the growing season.
Pruning: Climbing roses need plenty of support and must be tied as near horizontal as possible on to wires, trellis or similar. Newly planted climbing roses need little initial pruning. Thereafter prune in October or November removing any dead, diseased, rubbing and crossing stems while some old branches on mature plants can be cut out from the base to encourage fresh new growth. Tie in any new shoots and prune any flowered side shoots back by two thirds of their length. Deadhead regularly.
