Overview
Rosa ‘Rose de Rescht’ produces strongly scented double purple-crimson blooms. (France c.1840).
‘Old’ roses that are repeat flowering include China, Portland, Bourbon and Hybrid Perpetual groups and these all have great charm with many uses in the garden. They typically begin flowering from June onwards.
Position: Give them an open sunny position and any deep well-drained soil including clay.
Cultivation: They need plenty of nutrients so add Bonemeal and garden compost or well-rotted manure when planting. Rootgrow (beneficial mycorrhizal beneficial fungi) sprinkled on the roots will aid root development. Use a rose fertiliser such as Toprose during the growing season.
Pruning: Newly planted repeat-flowering ‘old’ roses need little initial pruning other than a light trim and the removal of any dead, diseased, rubbing and crossing stems. Once established maintain a balanced framework by reducing strong new growth in early March by up to one-third of its length. Shorten strong side shoots to two or three buds. Deadhead regularly in summer. Mature plants benefit from removal of some of the older main stems back to the base as this encourages vigorous new shoots from the base that will flower the following summer.
