Rambling roses generally flower only once, typically in June, and usually flower on the previous season’s growth.

Position: Give them an open sunny position and any deep well-drained soil including clay.

Cultivation: They need plenty of nutrients so add Bonemeal and garden compost or well-rotted manure when planting. Rootgrow (mycorrhizal beneficial fungi) sprinkled on the roots will aid root development. Use a rose fertiliser such as Toprose during the growing season. Rambling roses need plenty of support and must be tied as near horizontal as possible on to wires, trellis or similar.

Pruning: Newly planted rambling roses need little initial pruning. Thereafter they can be pruned any time after flowering up to the end of November. Untie all the stems and disentangle from the support, removing any dead, diseased, rubbing and crossing stems and cutting hard back (to ground level) a third or more of the oldest stems. Tie in the remainder taking them as horizontally as possible and shorten their side shoots by two-thirds.
