Overview

A traditional old favourite. Strong upright growth habit and heavy yielding producing high quality fruits in long bunches of medium sized crimson berries. Laxton is the most Mildew resistant variety. Flowers are produced later than most redcurrants thereby avoiding late frosts. The branches will spread & become more open with maturity. A good variety for all-purposes. Cropping season: mid July.  Self fertile.

Plant 1.5m (5ft) apart in rows 1.5m (5ft) apart. Plant in an open sunny or partly shaded north facing wall/fence sheltered from frost and strong winds. Prefers a slightly acid, moist but well-drained fertile soil.  Soak the root-ball before planting. Plant in a hole twice the diameter of the root-ball or pot. Mix an organic soil improver and general fertiliser with the infill soil. Water regularly until established.

Fruit is produced on the previous year’s growth and older shoots. Cut back the main branches by one-half after planting. Create a framework of 8-10 branches. Each Winter from year 3 shorten main shoots by one-half. Apply a general fertiliser in Spring.
