Overview

This is a self-fertile cross between a Gooseberry and a Blackcurrant this reliable plant produces crimson black fruits in July which are tasty and nutritious.

Plant 1.5m (5ft) apart in rows 3-4m (10-12ft) apart. Prepare area before planting by digging over and mix organic manure or compost into the top soil. Plant as soon as possible after purchase, provided weather conditions are suitable. Ensure the rootball is moist first then plant to the same level as in the pot.

Mulch yearly with well rotted compost or manure to retain moisture and suppress weeds. After planting, prune all stems back to 5cm (2in) above the ground. In later years remove about 25% of the stems to encourage new growth from the base.
