Overview

A spiny evergreen shrub that has narrow glossy leaves, a profusion of white flowers in late spring and early summer, followed by a mass of yellow berries in autumn. It is typically grown on a wall or fence, but also makes a dense impenetrable hedge. A valuable plant for wildlife, providing shelter, nectar-rich flowers and berries that are a valuable food source for birds.

Pyracanthas are easy to grow in any fertile soil in sun or partial shade and very tolerant of pollution.

Support: A framework of wires or trellis is advisable to support the plant while young.

Pruning: Prune annually in early to mid-summer (after flowering) to maintain a neat compact habit. Tie in any shoots to extend the framework of wall shrubs, and shorten branches to about 2 or 3 leaves from the base after flowering to expose the berries.
