A beautiful free flowering dwarf cherry: a pretty, delicate-looking, deciduous shrub which bursts into life in early spring when the crimson buds open to display pale pink flowers. The young serrated leaves are long and pale green, growing darker with age and having spectacular autumn colour. It has good architectural presence, having twisted wiry stems, compact, rounded shape and a gently spreading habit. It is an excellent shrub for small gardens.

It is easy to grow in any free-draining soil that retains some moisture (the species grows naturally on wooded mountain slopes where the rain drains off). When planting work in plenty of well-rotted garden compost into the soil. Give it a sheltered place close to trees or larger shrubs: these will not only protect the blossom from frost damage, but will also cast dappled light which will help the pale pink flowers to stand out. It is happy in sun or semi-shade and is also suitable for growing in a pot using a good quality compost.

If required lightly prune in late August to retain the shape and cut back any dead, diseased or branches which cross to healthy wood. With light pruning at this time of year it can be kept to 1m (3ft) high. Un-pruned it will grow slowly to around 2m (6ft) high.
