Overview

Limited Edition The Woodcock Nest by Kerry Goodwin is part of the The Art of Ornithology RSPB Collection.

It was the flickering of a stonechat which led W H Auden to write his 1930 poem, The Wanderer. ‘Or lonely on fell as chat, By pot-holed becks, A bird stone-haunting, an unquiet bird.’ The poet was seemingly familiar with the sound of the stonechat- like that of two pebbles being struck together. Perhaps Auden could identify with the tiny wandering stonechat- one of the few insectivorous birds to tough it out through the British winters. Kerry, in her own form of poetry has made the rusty-breasted stonechat her wandering subject too. The dashing male stonechat, with a black head and a white collar around the side of his neck, flits between three panels in this endearing design.

Woodcocks are waders, thickset, long-billed, and superbly camouflaged. On the woodland floor, where they hide by day, their rust, fawn and black plumage conceals them among the dead leaves of winter. Often the first sign that they are about is a blur of russet and a whirr of wings as a woodcock rises from almost under your feet and twists away between the tree-trunks. In Kerry’s design, the woodcock appears three times amongst the debris of leaf-strewn floor: at rest, in flight and protectively covering two beautiful speckled eggs.

Moorcroft’s relationship with the RSPB grows year on year and we continue to stride forward with the charity bringing a wealth of naturalistic designs inspired by their ground-breaking work, in order to raise essential funds to them. This year, Moorcroft designers turn their attention to birds which have captured their imagination of late and together, have brought us The Art of Ornithology.

Produced under license from RSPB Sales Ltd to raise awareness of the RSPB (charity registration England and Wales no 207076 and Scotland no SC037654). For all licensed products sold by W. Moorcroft Ltd, W. Moorcroft Ltd will donate £1000 per annum to RSPB Sales Ltd, which gives all its distributable profits through Gift Aid to the RSPB.
