Overview

A superb hybrid selection from America that combines the best attributes of Mahonia bealei with the texture and habit of Mahonia lomariifolia. A first-rate evergreen shrub of distictive upright habit, with handsome rich green finely-cut pinnate foliage and fragrant, bright lemon yellow flowers produced in early winter; these are followed by a crop of large handsome blue-black berries.

Position: A sheltered position out of the wind is important, but otherwise Mahonia x media ‘Arthur Menzies’ is tolerant of most soils and conditions, especially shade under trees.

Pruning: Prune as necessary after flowering to encourage bushy growth or to remove any dead or diseased growth.
