Overview

A vigorous and upright deciduous shrub with green foliage and long lasting tassels of very distinctive flower heads consisting of wine coloured bracts enclosing white flowers, followed by dark purple almost black berries. It can be relied on to give a long period of interest from Summer through to Autumn. A magnet for bees.

Position: Thrives in most soils in full sun or partial shade.

Pruning: Remove any weak dead or damage shoots after flowering.

Leycesteria formosa (also referred to as Himalayan Honeysuckle, Flowering Nutmeg and Pheasant Berry) is one of Ashwood’s most recommended low-maintenance shrubs. Vigorous and upright; Leycesteria can reach up to 5 or 6 feet within 10 years, making them the perfect immediate-impact plant for your garden.

What we love about Himalayan Honeysuckle:

Low-Maintenance: These shrubs are hardy through winter, thrive in normal garden soil, and do not require regular pruning. They are even recommended for coastal gardens.

Wildlife Friendly: Nursery staff note that lots of bees have been seen floating around the white trumpet flowers and purple berries.

Long Lasting: The purple bracts enclosing white flowers hang down in the form of a tassel. These are then followed by deep purple berries, and this process is ongoing throughout the whole of June, July, August and September. A
