Overview

This is the first time we have offered Hepatica nobilis var. nobilis f. monoloba, March 2025. A real oddity, most of the leaves have only one single lobe and the flowers are blue as per type. It appears to come true from seed. I have not yet grown f. monoloba in the garden, but I can’t see why it shouldn’t be hardy. Single flowers in variable shades of blue, flowering during the first mild spells of spring from February to March. The foliage is evergreen. Height 6-9cm.

Hepatica nobilis var. nobilis f. monoloba has single flowers in variable shades of blue from February to March. The evergreen, foliage has only one rounded lobe. Height 6-9cm 

Hepatica nobilis var. nobilis f. monoloba should be planted on a cool, well-drained slope in a light ‘fluffy’ soil rich in leaf mould. It is essential that they are exposed to early spring sunshine, but they must receive plenty of shade immediately after flowering and especially during the heat of the summer. They will thrive under deciduous trees and shrubs or in crevices in the rock garden, performing best where there is good humidity. They respond well to a top-dressing of leaf-mould in autumn and an annual feed of fish, blood and bone in late winter. Remove old leaves just before flowering.
