I find that Hepatica japonica var. japonica is tender in the UK and must be grown in an alpine house. This selection usually has ivory white sepals with pink stamens. The leaves are green and triangular with acute lobes. A lower compact evergreen perennial, which is smaller and grows more slowly than H. japonica var. nipponica f. magna. Height 5-8cm.

The flowers are smaller, have more slender sepals as well as fewer stamens and pistils than H. japonica var. nipponica f. magna. This selection usually has ivory white sepals with pink stamens. The leaves are green and triangular with acute lobes. A lower compact evergreen perennial, which is smaller and grows more slowly than H. japonica var. nipponica f. magna. Usually found in small populations on the tops of mountains. Altitude 300-950 metres.
