Overview

Hepatica japonica var. nipponica f. magna is by far the most influential form of Japanese hepatica where many exciting cultivars have been found. We offer seedlings from our best mother plants: rich blues, violet and purple, through reds and rose to pure pristine whites, flowering from February to March. All with countless different forms and colour of stamens and pistils. The leaves are the largest of the Japanese hepatica, either rounded or acute lobes, green or beautifully marbled. Best grown in an Alpine house, but well worth trying in a sheltered position in the rock garden. Height 15-20cm.

Note from John our hepatica grower: please ask if you prefer a certain colour, but remember that they are all seedlings and can be slightly variable. At the moment I have a few bi-colour, pink, red and deep violet purple. I will do my best to select a particular colour, as they come into flower, please be patient.

The Japanese hepaticas require an extremely sheltered position if grown outside. Plant on a cool, well-drained slope in a light ‘fluffy’ soil rich in leaf mould. It is essential that they are exposed to early spring sunshine, but they must receive plenty of shade immediately after flowering and especially during the heat of the summer. They will thrive under deciduous trees and shrubs or in crevices in the rock garden, performing best where there is good humidity. They respond well to a top-dressing of leaf-mould in autumn and an annual feed of fish, blood and bone in late winter. Remove old leaves just before flowering. The Japanese species of hepaticas are better grown in an alpine house using clay pots, where they will flower to perfection providing an excellent display during winter or early spring.
