Overview
A vigorous, self-clinging evergreen climber with large, leathery green leaves with creamy margins. Produces small green flowers in the autumn months, followed by black berries which are loved by birds. This variety prefers alkaline soil, so is ideal for gardens that may contain rubble and other debris from building work. Great for covering walls, fences, old tree stumps, and can also be used for ground cover.
Ivies are one of the most versatile plants and ideal for any garden. They are vigorous growing, self-clinging and evergreen, but can be pruned at any time. They grow well in any aspect, being shade tolerant but also sun loving, suited to most soil types and evergreen: giving all year round colour.
Uses for Ivy:
•Because of their versatile uses, ivy can be used to fill in those troublesome gaps in the garden. They are excellent for ground cover, quickly covering dry areas where little else grows, and the evergreen foliage can act as a weed suppressant. They are ideal for steep banks and can help stabilise topsoil.
•Good for covering vertical areas on walls and fences. Self-clinging, so no need to tie in new growth.
•Ivy is an excellent plant for wildlife. Dense growth provides shelter for animals during bad weather, as well as nesting spots for birds. Some varieties produce nectar-rich flowers which are loved by insects throughout the summer, and berries provide a food source in the winter.
