Overview

Fremontodendron is a large, vigorous, evergreen shrub with dark green lobed leaves. It bears strong yellow flowers from spring right into the autumn months. ‘California Glory’ is a hardier variety of Fremontodendron and can withstand most UK winters, but benefits from a little protection.

This plant is part of (Pruning Group 1), so flower early in the year on growth produced from the previous summer.

Pruning Group 1 require no regular pruning, and should only be pruned back hard in their first spring after planting. This is to encourage growth of multiple healthy stems.(If young plants are left unpruned, they tend to produce very long single stems with a small cluster of flowers at the top). Cut back to above a strong pair of leaf buds about 30cm (12in) above soil level. For regular maintenance, only prune after flowering in spring once the danger of frosts have passed.

Cultural information: Fremontodendron grow best in well drained soil, but will tolerate most soil types. Although hardy, new growth can be susceptible to damage, so requires a sunny position with shelter from strong winds and harsh frosts.

Support: Fremontodendron is best trained up against a wall but can be left to grow naturally in its own shape. Tie in young stems on training wires whilst they are still soft and flexible.
