Overview

Originating in the National Trust’s lovely woodland garden near Tiverton in Devon. It seeds itself naturally forming clumps of plants which have beautifully mottled leaves of maroon and green. Lovely nodding pink flowers appear in March-April.

Erythroniums are beautiful early Spring-flowering woodland plants which grow from bulbs. They thrive in the cool shade of deciduous trees or shrubs on a good deep loamy soil that is moist but free-draining. They will tolerate sandy or clay soils if plenty of organic matter is added to a good depth. They are dormant from early summer onwards so it’s a good idea to mark where they are planted.
