Cornus x rutgersensis Celestial Shadow has large, handsome green leaves, which develop beautiful canary yellow margins followed by spectacular pink and purple tints in Autumn. The large flowers are creamy white bracts which often turn pale pink as they age followed by red fruits during late summer.

A true connoisseur’s selection forming an elegant deciduous shrub or small tree. Celestial Shadow is an outstanding and robust selection from the nurseryman Don Shadow and was bred from the Rutger hybrid Celestial.
Cornus x rutgersensis Celestial Shadow has large, handsome green leaves, which develop beautiful canary yellow margins followed by spectacular pink and purple tints in Autumn. The large flowers are creamy white bracts which often turn pale pink as they age followed by red fruits during late summer.
This flowering dogwood is a Rutger hybrid between the American Cornus florida and the Asian Cornus kousa. These Rutger hybrids were first developed by Dr. Elwin Orton at Rutgers University New Jersey with the intention of improving the disease resistance and vigour of the dogwoods. The resulting hybrids give a stunning display of flowers in late Spring often followed later by spectacular autumn foliage colour. In time they make a large deciduous shrub or small tree of graceful habit, perfect for the smaller garden.
The flowers consist of four petal-like bracts with a central round boss and, as the plant matures, these are produced in great abundance especially if the previous summer has been warm and sunny. The bracts typically flush pink on their tips as they mature. Attractive strawberry-like fruits usually follow the flower bracts in autumn. Cultivation: A sunny position in the shelter of other trees and shrubs is best, avoiding very hot dry sites. They will grow happily in semi shade but their flower production and colour will not be as intense. Give them a moist, free-draining neutral to acid soil with plenty of depth and organic matter. They will tolerate slightly alkaline soils but only if the soil is deep with plenty of organic matter added.
