A superb hardy large shrub or small tree of compact, slightly tiered habit producing large white flowerheads in spring, one of the earliest of the dogwoods to flower. Stunning coppery-red autumn tints.
Cornus florida ‘Eddie’s White Wonder’ is a hybrid between Cornus florida ‘Rubra’ and Cornus nuttallii. It gives a stunning display of flowers in Spring often followed later by spectacular autumn foliage colour. In time it makes a large deciduous shrub or small tree of graceful slightly tiered habit, perfect for the smaller garden.
The flowers consist of four petal-like bracts with a central round boss and, as the plant matures, these are produced in great abundance especially if the previous summer has been warm and sunny.
Cornus florida and its cultivars create interest in the garden all year round. They are the American cousins of Cornus kousa and have many similarities, giving a stunning display of flowers in late Spring often followed later by spectacular autumn foliage colour. In time they make a large deciduous shrub or small tree of graceful spreading silhouette, perfect for the smaller garden.
The flowers consist of four petal-like bracts with a central round boss and, as the plant matures, these are produced in great abundance especially if the previous summer has been warm and sunny. The bracts typically flush pink on their tips as they mature. Attractive strawberry-like fruits usually follow the flower bracts in autumn.
Cultivation: A sunny position in the shelter of other trees and shrubs is best, avoiding very hot, dry or windy sites. It will grow happily in semi shade but its flower production and colour will not be as intense. Give it a moist, free-draining neutral to acid soil with plenty of depth and organic matter. It will tolerate slightly alkaline soils but only if the soil is deep with plenty of organic matter added.
