Pale ink with a blue and orange beard.
Bearded Irises flower from late April to early June, some flowering for only two to three weeks, weather depending. Tall bearded irises are carried on sturdy stems, 75cm-110cm (30in-43in) high depending on their cultivar. They need their rhizomes baking in the summer sun and need a dry free-draining soil in order to flower well.
Planting: Plant new iris rhizomes from July to October 30cm (1ft) apart. Make sure the rhizomes are partially exposed so they get baked in summer sun – this encourages good flowering. Choose a position in full sun with free draining soil preferably alkaline or neutral. Avoid mulching over the rhizomes, as this can cause rotting and obstructs the sunlight that promotes healthy rhizomes
Feeding: Apply a balanced organic-based fertiliser such as fish, blood and bone or Vitax Q4 at 70g per m sq. Avoid fertilisers high in nitrogen.Â
Maintenance: After flowering, cut down flowered stems to near ground level. Divide every three or four years – flowering starts to decline as rhizomes become overcrowded
