Prefers a deep, fertile, moist but free-draining soil in a warm, sunny position. Newly planted alstroemerias can be mulched in winter to give extra protection from penetrating frost. A useful tip to prolong flowering is to remove the old flower stems by giving them a sharp tug from the base.
