Overview
Akebia trifoliata is a vigorous, semi-evergreen climber. Leaves consist of three leaflets, each slightly lobed, which can have a bronze hue when young. Produces small reddish purple flowers in spring, followed by fruits that have a slight coconut flavour. An ideal plant for covering large areas quickly.
- Planting: Grow in fertile, humus-rich soil, which must be moist but well-drained. Suitable for growing over archways, trellis and on walls.
- Aspect: For better flowers, plant in a sunnier position. For stronger foliage, plant in a slightly shadier position.
- Care: Akebia is self-twining, so only basic support is needed. Thread new growth into place whilst it is still flexible to keep it neat and tidy. No regular pruning is required, however they can be hard pruned with sharp secateurs to be kept controlled.
