Overview

Formerly known as Cimicifuga and also commonly known as Bugbane, these are attractive architectural herbaceous prerennials with large palmate leaves in dark tones of purple and bronze. The scented slender bottlebrush flowers, produced throughout late summer and throughout autumn are particularly fragrant in the evening and are irresistible to bees, butterflies and hoverflies. They make an ideal choice for the back of a damp shady border.

Actea prefer a moisture retentive soil and a sheltered shady spot, avoiding windy, exposed sites.

The only maintenance required is to support them as they grow and to cut them back in late Autumn. They are dormant in Winter, re-emerging in Spring.
