Overview
This is a robust herbaceous perennial with handsome, thistle-like leaves foliage and tall, erect racemes of two-lipped purplish-white flowers from July-September.
Acanthus will make a good choice as a statuesque specimen plant for a sunny border but requires plenty of space to develop. A free-draining fertile soil is essential for they will not flourish on very wet soils. Deep mulch in the autumn to give some winter protection in very cold areas from cold winds and frosts. If grown in a container they can be lifted indoors easily.
Cut back old stems after flowering.
