The Albrighton Trust: our Charity of the Year 2022

Posted on Monday 3rd January 2022

The Ashwood Charity of the Year 2022 is to be The Albrighton Trust which offers educational and recreational activities for people disadvantaged by a disability or special needs or illness. It is run by a dedicated team, including many volunteers, who have a genuine desire to help people while treating them with respect and compassion.

Learning greenhouse skills…

All activities are either inspired by or involve the outdoor environment. The first-class facilities are specifically designed to ensure that everyone, regardless of disability or capability, can experience the joy and satisfaction of engaging in positive, outdoor activity.

A local charity

This is a local charity, based 15 miles away from Ashwood, in the rural location of Albrighton, near Wolverhampton. It is set in the beautiful grounds and gardens of the remains of a 13th century fortified manor house and moat. The gardens are open to the general public to visit on most weekdays all year round and it’s a great opportunity to experience first-hand the amazing work that the charity carries out.

Gardening

The award-winning natural and landscaped gardens at The Albrighton Trust provide a perfect setting for creating a supportive environment conducive to effective recreation, learning and personal development within the capabilities of everybody.

The facilities at the Trust have been designed to ensure that everyone, regardless of disability or ability can experience the joy and satisfaction of cultivating and nurturing that only horticulture can bring. The excellent facilities also have a range of wheelchair accessible raised flower beds and a commercial size greenhouse.

Angling

Learning fishing skills…

The Albrighton Trust offers angling on the well-stocked moat, the facilities designed specifically to enable all people, regardless of disability or ability, to enjoy the sport and leisure pursuit of fishing.

A safe and comfortable environment is provided, allowing excellent opportunities for therapy or rehabilitation as well as recreation.

Woodcraft

Woodcraft at The Albrighton Trust provides a unique learning experience; it is rich in so many areas of learning and development, building self-esteem and confidence.

Participants are empowered to use real tools, by being given responsibility, accomplishing tasks that initially feel to be challenging, gaining new skills and finally taking pride in their creations.

Me & You, Growing Together

Me & You, Growing Together is a Lottery funded project run by the  Albrighton Trust. The aim of the project is to help address the lack of work experience opportunities available for young people between 19-25 years who are disadvantaged by disability, special needs and ill health, who have finished education or are studying part time and would like to work one day per week in horticulture or woodcraft.

Woodcraft…invaluable experience for the workplace

The trust plans to build the skills, self-confidence and esteem of young people disadvantaged by disability, special needs and ill health by providing worthwhile and meaningful work experience.

Why did we choose this charity?

Nursery owner John Massey says:  “The Albrighton Trust is a charity close to my heart. I admire its emphasis on outdoor learning and in particular the encouragement of gardening and horticulture, not only for the sense of well-being they bring but also the invaluable and lifelong skills that are learned. I’m so proud to be supporting a local charity that’s such a shining example of what can be achieved to improve the lives of people disadvantaged by disability, special needs and ill health.”

How will we raise money?

The Ashwood Charitable Trust supports our Charity of the Year. Philip Baulk, spokesperson for the Ashwood Charitable Trust, says:

‘Our main fundraising comes from John’s Garden Open Days.  The Ashwood Charitable Trust will donate £5.50 of every garden entrance fee to our Charity of the Year. We are also fortunate to receive a number of individual private donations from our generous customers and friends and we would like to say a big thank you to anyone who supports our charity in any way, no matter how small.’
