The Adam Greathead Award receives a grant…

The Adam Greathead Award has received a substantial grant from The Finnis Scott Foundation to support horticultural students.

The Finnis Scott Foundation was established in 2007 and commemorates the lives of Sir David Montagu Douglas Scott, KCMG, OBE and his wife Valerie Finnis, VMH, and their love of art collecting and gardening.

The trustees make grants for charitable purposes and their present policy is to focus on grant-making in the areas of horticulture and plant sciences, as well as the exhibition, conservation and study of art.

The trustees of the Ashwood Charitable Trust are delighted to announce that the Foundation has recently made a grant of £9,000 to support the Adam Greathead Award. This award offers students the opportunity to work and learn in two renowned gardens, John’s Garden at Ashwood and Great Dixter in East Sussex, the home and garden of the late Christopher Lloyd.

Students have the opportunity to learn best horticultural practice both in the garden and the commercial nursery as well as tutoring from John Massey VMH, and his head gardener Nigel Hopes at Ashwood and from Fergus Garrett at Great Dixter.

They attend masterclasses, have regular plant identification tests and do plant profiles. This is a practical award and each student will be able to enhance their horticultural knowledge which should lead them to a very successful future career in whatever sphere of horticulture they choose.

John’s Garden at Ashwood opens for visitors every Saturday from February until late November/early December.

Proceeds from garden openings are divided equally between the Adam Greathead Award and the Ashwood Charity of the Year.
