We are delighted to announce that the total so far raised for High Flyers (our Charity of the Year 2016) is £5,243.40…and it’s still rising! Most of this has come from John’s Garden Open Days and Hellebore Tours (the entire proceeds from entrance charges are donated). Reasonable weather on these key events so far this year has ensured good visitor numbers.

The garden open day on April 23rd was a great success with an amazing 525 visitors from all over the UK, many visiting for the first time. We had wonderful feedback on the garden: “inspirational” and “totally magical” and “wow!” were just a few of the comments, with many visitors hoping to return to see it in another season. The wildlife meadow has also proved a popular addition to the garden for keen gardeners and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

More about Ashwood’s Charity of the Year 2016

High Flyers is Ashwood’s Charity of the Year 2016. Based at Pegasus House, Wombourne, Staffordshire, it’s a day group supporting young adults with learning difficulties. High Flyers currently has 45 members attending and includes young adults with Autism, Down’s Syndrome and William’s Syndrome, many with additional medical and mental health needs.

How do we plan to help High Flyers?

High Flyers needs to raise a deposit for a mortgage by November 2017, when their existing rental agreement and licence runs out, and this will enable them to purchase either the current premises in Wombourne or a new building.

Our fund-raising at Ashwood will therefore be directed to High Flyer’s Building Fund and we hope to raise a minimum of £15,000 (and hopefully more) to help secure the future of High Flyers and ensure that young adults with learning difficulties have a permanent base in the local community.

Sheila Baker, founder of High Flyers, says “We ‘re so pleased that we’ve been chosen by Ashwood Nurseries as their Charity of the Year…their fund-raising is going to make such a difference to our future. We hope many more people will visit on forthcoming garden open days this year…not only will they be inspired by the beauty of the garden but, at the same time, they will be contributing to our building fund.”
