The Vegetable Garden
Onions can be lifted and placed on wire mesh to allow the sunlight onto the bulbs. Onions store best in an airy place, tied in ‘ropes’ or placed in single layers in trays. Continue to water main and late cropping potatoes. Remove any blighted foliage and harvest affected crops, only storing the good quality tubers in hessian sacks in a cool but frost- free place. Before lifting main crop potatoes, make sure the skin has set (i.e. cannot be rubbed off easily by thumb). Sweet corn may be harvested: they are ripe when the kernels contain a milky fluid.
Japanese Onion sets can be planted this month. Sow Swiss Chard, Kale, Spinach Beet and Spring Cabbage. Fleeces or cloches will protect a variety of winter crops, including lettuces, spring cabbage, carrots, broad beans and oriental leaves such as pak choi. Green Manure crops can be sown for digging into the soil in spring. Spray brassicas against caterpillars using a proprietary brand.
Botrytis on tomatoes often rears its head this month as the nights become longer and damper. Botrytis or grey mould infects plants through areas of physical damage such as wounds where leaves have been removed or where foliage is damaged while picking tomatoes. It is not worth spraying at this stage but it is prudent to increase the ventilation and to try and reduce the humidity in the greenhouse as this disease thrives on damp conditions. The lower leaves can be removed to assist with ripening the fruit while the tips can also be pinched out from end of August through to early September. I recommend removing lower tomato leaves by bending them upwards and towards the main stem so they snap off rather than cutting off with a knife as this wound often allows the botrytis to gain entry.
Remove any shading from greenhouses. Clear finished crops of cucumbers and tomatoes, thoroughly clean and carry out any repairs the greenhouse before housing plants for winter.
