The Vegetable Garden
Watering is critical if August is a dry month as many crops will bolt if short of water. Lettuce, brassicas and many root crops will benefit from additional water during dry spells. Spray potatoes and tomatoes with Bordeaux Mixture or Bayer Fruit and Vegetable Disease Control fungicide against blight which can become a problem in warm wet weather. Spray celery with Scotts Bug Clear Ultra Gun to control celery fly. This can be used as a contact and systemic spray on other selected vegetables, NEVER spraying when they are in flower as this will kill beneficial insects such as bees and ALWAYS check the instructions and restrictions. Cover leeks with Environmesh to prevent leek moth and onion fly as no insecticide is approved for these pests.
Sow winter lettuce such as ‘All the Year Round’ or ‘Winter Density’ and Spring Cabbage such as ‘Pixie’ and ‘Durham Elf’. Japanese hardy onion seed can be sown to form bulbs early next summer, alternatively all onion sets will be in by early September. Leafy greens such as Corn Salad, Land Cress, Rocket and Mustard Spinach can also be sown. August is a great month for sowing green manure crops on any vacant ground. Autumn mixes are available that are fast growing and can be dug in during late autumn while other slower to mature subjects can be dug in the following spring: this way you add organic matter to the soil improving both the nutrient level and organic content.
Keep beans and peas watered and mulched. Pinch out the tops of runner beans once they have reached the top of their supports. In dry weather runner bean flowers may not set properly and a light spraying with water each day will encourage beans to set. Continue to feed tomatoes with Tomorite. The lower leaves can be removed to assist with ripening the fruit. The tips can be pinched out towards the end of August or early September to induce better ripening
