Planting Summer-flowering Bulbs and Tubers
Dahlia tubers should be started into growth in small pots in March and April with a view to having a hardened off large plant for planting out in late May or early June when all danger of frost is past. These will also produce cutting material if you want to increase your stock. Or you can keep the dahlia tubers cool and dry with a view to planting directly in the garden in late April or early May so that by the time it emerges above the soil again all danger of frost is past.
Plant Lily bulbs in free-draining soil that has been enriched with leaf-mould or organic matter: on heavy soils plant the bulbs on a deep layer of sharp grit. Plant deeply, at a depth equivalent to at least the size of the bulb. Pot a few up in pots for an early display for use on the patio, alternatively plunge pots in the borders for instant colour. Plant Anemone and Ranunculus tubers with the claws downwards; 60-75mm (2½-3”) and 37mm (1½”) deep respectively and 15cm (6”) apart. Plant lily of the valley crowns in irregular groups.
Begonia corms can be purchased now and started into growth by carefully placing them dome side down and lightly pressing them into the surface of general purpose potting compost in seed trays. Water in and place in a propagator or warm place. They can then be individually potted and grown on for planting out when all danger of frost is past usually in late May or early June.
