Lawn Care
Damage to lawns caused by badgers and other animals digging can be a frequent problem. They are almost certainly digging for grubs of the chafer grub and are extremely difficult to deter especially when they can smell such a valuable food source. There is no chemical control for the chafer grub. Moss is a frequent problem at this time of year. Scott’s Autumn Lawn Builder with Moss Control can be applied to lawns here in the Midlands until the end of November. Keep the lawn aerated, free of dead thatch, falling leaves and debris. During mild dry conditions, a light topping with a lightweight mower may be desirable, allowing the dew to dry before cutting the lawn and collecting any trimmings. Brush off worm casts before mowing the lawn. Fusarium or snow mould can attack lawns at this time of the year usually on acidic soils. Symptoms are expanding yellow white patches with a pinkish tinge. If this is a problem avoid over-use of high nitrogen feeds, using instead Scott’s Autumn Lawn Builder with Moss Control which supplies phosphates and potash.
