The Fruit Garden
Complete strawberry planting to give them time to establish strong crowns. Tidy up older established strawberry beds, using shears to cut back old foliage, lightly cultivate the soil and then apply a general fertilizer such as Blood, Fish and Bone. Prune loganberries and blackberries by cutting out the canes that have fruited at ground level, training new canes and tying in. Cut out the old fruited canes on raspberries to encourage strong new shoots for next summer’s crop.
Pick apples and pears as they ripen, a long-armed, adjustable Wolf Apple Picker will make this job much easier on established trees. Store unblemished fruit wrapped in paper in airy boxes (tomato trays are ideal) in a cold but frost-free environment. Place grease bands around fruit trees to prevent wingless female moths from climbing the trunks to lay their eggs.
Mildew and scab on apples and pears usually put in an appearance this month. Remove the worst affected leaves and gather fallen leaves off the ground. Some gardeners ask if they should cut back infected stems of apples. This is good practice on apples that fruit on spurs and late Summer pruning will not only induce more fruiting buds the following season but will also help remove any infected foliage. However do not prune tip bearing varieties of apples such as Bramley as you’ll be cutting off next year’s flower buds which in turn means there will be no fruit. Scab often attacks plants which are experiencing stress so, to maintain healthy plants, mulch subjects that are prone to attack during late winter and early spring, ensure they never go short of water and keep fruit trees open pruned to allow more light and air through.
